Default Cell Phone Service in Suches area?

I use AT&T for my cell phone service, and the service has definetly been improving in the Fannin county area over the past couple of years. There are now strong signals due to new towers in McCaysville/Copperhill and the far out Aska Road areas where there used to be none, as well as on GA Route 60 from Morganton down toward Suches a good many miles (you can actually see a couple of towers that have gone up over the past year or two from route 60).

However, in the town of Suches itself (I'm calling the "town" the intersection of Route 180 and 60, where the post office is and the gas station), there is still no signal, and you dont get one until you get to the top of Woody Gap at the Lumpkin county line - where again service is fine all the way to Dahlonega. This leaves a fairly large hole on this highway for service right in Suches. Anyone heard of any plans to build this out by any of the carriers?

the reps for the cell companies have been roaming around. Had one of their reps stop by and offer $550/month to put a cell tower on my land. I might have done it but I dont have that much land and it would have been 180' tall...no ignoring that

I was through there the other day again - drove GA 60 from Morganton all the way down to Dahlonega. Was traveling with a friend who has Verizon. They had service in the "town" of Suches (by the Post office - at GA 60 and 180) but AT&T still does not - my phone was dead at that point. Verizon has full signal at that point and upon looking around I did notice a tower near Woody Gap School (up on a hill on the other side of the highway) - so maybe AT&T will eventually co-locate here too - would be nice.

Take a look at the info on this link about ATT cell service in Suches (no plans). There's an email address of someone at ATT we can bother about it. Feel free to fill up their inbox.

Seems silly for AT&T to totally write this area off, especially since Verizon already has a tower that they could co-locate on. It dosent seem like it would cost them very much to build a cell site. I will write the guy an email though and add my 2 cents.

yeah, after all, what would all of y'all do without your cell phones glued to your ears? I wonder how I have managed to live my whole life without one? Hmmm.

well, for one thing, I could save the $30 a month that TDS gets from me for a service that I rarely use, and two, I could be reached in an emergency while I was out fishing in the creek, or hiking in the woods, etc. I definitely don't chat on my cell phone. It's a necessary evil in these times, and if ATT is gonna be my vendor, they need to at least show an effort to make them work everywhere the competition is working.

Times change... the world is a constantly changing place... mountains or flatlands, cities or towns, get out more and look around...

Default AT&T in Suches in 2010

The earlier poster's link has now been updated by AT&T and it appears that they have budgeted for at least 1 cell site in Suches area for 2010 (subject to change). Some progress is coming it looks like.
