Default Genocide Olympics

I'm posting this on the Blue Ridge side of this forum since it seems to get the most traffic and yes, I know the topic at which I'm communicating doesn't directly affect us but it is a way for us to show solidarity and support for those who have suffered needlessly at the hands of a brutal regime.

As you may or may not know the upcoming summer Olympics will be held in Beijing, China. What many do not know is that the Chinese gov't is one of the most ardent supporters of the government in Sudan which if you haven't read or seen the news in the last few years is responsible for one of the, if not the greatest act of genocide known in history. China currently purchases approx. 2/3 of Sudan's oil exports and is aligned with Khartoum in many ways and has even showed support on their behalf within the UN Security Council. Even as recently as today in a report on MSNBC.com, Steven Spielberg, pulled his support from the Olympics.

Quote:
“Sudan’s government bears the bulk of the responsibility for these ongoing crimes but the international community, and particularly China, should be doing more,” Spielberg said in a statement. “China’s economic, military and diplomatic ties to the government of Sudan continue to provide it with the opportunity and obligation to press for change.”
Quote:
Jill Savitt, director of the activist group Dream for Darfur, conceded that the Chinese government has taken modest steps to ease the suffering“The Olympics are China’s debut on the world stage, and Beijing wants the Olympics to go well,” Savitt said. “Unless China acts now to resolve the crisis in Darfur, the Beijing Games will best be remembered as the genocide Olympics.”
You, I, we, can all make our voices heard on this matter. The publicity that the Olympics already brings also brings with it the opportunity to bring to light such issues and this is one that doesn't need to get swept under the rug. The stories and accounts of what is going on are mind blowing and horrendous.

Here are a couple of resources to bring you up to date in case you would like to know more:

As always you can contact your gov't representative

If you're really brave find out here if who you invest with are directly/indirectly supporting the brutality.

Thanks for your time as always!
