This is a pretty big deal and an interesting dynamic. If this passes, I could at the very least imagine several "brown-bag" Fannin County restaurants scrambling for some downtown space... |

If having a beer with a basket of hot wings once every other month makes me an alcoholic...then I take my alcoholic money out of the county and spend it in Murphy. I really wanted to make a commercial for Blue Ridge where Jesus is driving a big ford van (15 passenger for Jesus to bring the 12 diciples with him) around blue ridge looking for a resturant where they can have wine with their supper...the last scene would be Jesus at ingles having it explained to him that theres no way for him to have wine with supper Sunday night.

I hope the City of Blue Ridge does pass the beer and wine ordinance. If so then the Meyer's German Bakery will be able to open a "Beer Garden" and I'll be the first in line to apply for a job to serve at the little pub. Heck I'll work for free only pay me in pints.

It is my understanding the current resolution under discussion applies only to non-profits such as the BRMAA and only for special events. This would not apply to any restaurants or other business that operate with the intent to make a profit.
Yes, it is a step in the right direction but is far from pouring wine or beer in a restaurant. I would be really surprised if this passes and then they turn around and create a new resolution for restaurants. |

Steve, that was my understanding until the meeting. However, this was asked point-blank and I believe it was the mayor that stated that the ordinance would indeed include restaurants. Additionally, the focus of the two meetings has been on the tax/economic side and special events are not going to put a dent in that. First meeting synopsis:

The News Observer now has an article online about the second meeting:

I understand people not wanting to drink for religious reasons but why does thier religion prevent me from doing something perfectly legal. Secondly, what ever happened to separation of church and state. I don't see where some people's religious views should have that much sway in city policy. Some people want Blue ridge to be dry... it will dry up allright. Dry up and vanish untill the land is so cheap the chicken farmers will move in. If anyone has any desire for Blue Ridge to remain on the map they will agree to allow each their own. Otherwise I fear BR will be just a gas station people stop at on the way to Ellijay or Murhpy. People are, in fact, avioding the area. Even some God fearing Christians enjoy a glass of wine once in a while. I'm sure if serving alcohol would cause the devil arrive in town he would have shown up in Atlanta by now.
Just my opinion, and yes I live here |

and they will be the first to cry foul when the city dries up and ceases to exist, their land is worthless and there are no longer enough people left in town to pay to keep a roof on their church. What do these people not get. I will bring my beer and not be shy about it. Heck I don't even drink that much and have never brown bagged but I will be SURE to now. There is beer and wine here like it or not. It's juts foolish for them to take the town down with them.
